Isometric raises $40m to take AI certification beyond carbon removal
Onfido co-founder Eamon Jubbawy built a carbon removal certifier that checks every data point and bills the buyer, not the project. AVP’s Series A now takes its AI checks to steel, fuel and power

On 22 June, London-based Isometric announced a $40m (£30.3m) Series A led by AVP, the venture firm that counts the insurer AXA as an anchor investor. Every one of Isometric’s existing institutional investors came back, including Plural and Lowercarbon Capital, and John Doerr, chairman of Kleiner Perkins, and Walter Kortschak invested personally. The company said the money will take its certification platform, Certify, from carbon removal into the rest of the industrial economy.
Certification is the check that stands between a low-carbon product and the premium a buyer pays for it. Isometric’s announcement put the problem plainly: “Put a tonne of green steel next to a tonne of conventional steel and you’ll struggle to tell them apart.” A buyer, a regulator or an investor wants proof first, and the company said that proof has meant a manual process “that could take 12 months or more”.
Certify’s AI agents read and cross-check the data behind a claim, from sensor readings and satellite imagery to supply chain records and lab results. They flag discrepancies and surface the cases that need expert judgment, so auditors who used to spot-check a sample of the evidence can cover all of it. “What used to take months now takes hours,” the company said.
Isometric made two choices in carbon removal: checking every data point rather than a sample, and charging the buyer of a certificate rather than the project being certified. The round funds the first in new markets; the announcement does not say whether the second goes with it. Both bear directly on what a company pays for a credit or a low-carbon material, and how far it can rely on the paperwork behind it.
From identity checks to carbon removal
Eamon Jubbawy, Isometric’s founder and chief executive, co-founded Onfido, the identity verification company. Isometric’s own site says Onfido verified more than one billion identities before it was acquired by Entrust for $650m (£492m). Companies House shows Jubbawy incorporated the business on 5 January 2022 as Beast Technologies Ltd. It became Exponential HQ Ltd that June and has been Isometric HQ Ltd since February 2023, with Jubbawy holding more than half of its shares and votes.
Introducing the company in March 2023, Jubbawy wrote that carbon markets had “struggled to gain the trust of experts” and remained expensive and error-prone. Isometric started with a registry for verified removal records and a science platform for the protocols behind them. In July 2023 it raised a $25m (£18.9m) seed round led by Lowercarbon Capital and Plural, as reported by Tech.eu. Lowercarbon’s Ryan Orbuch has been a director since November 2022, according to Companies House. Certify followed in March 2025, aimed at carbon removal suppliers for whom verification had often taken years.
Who pays the certifier
Isometric’s pricing page says it “charges buyers directly, rather than suppliers”, with a flat verification fee based on the size of the buyer’s order and paid regardless of how many credits are issued. “Isometric cannot charge more by over-certifying,” the page says. Fees vary by pathway. The table for biomass carbon removal and storage runs from $10 (about £7.60) a tonne when a supplier issues up to 25,000 certificates a year down to $3 a tonne above 500,000; the other pathways’ tables start as high as $30 and fall as low as $2.
The company said its certification is relied on by Microsoft, Anglo American, JPMorganChase and Boeing, and by more than 200 industrial projects; its homepage showed 209 industrial projects being certified on the day of the announcement. Isometric also said it has been contracted for more than 16 million tonnes of carbon removal, which it said makes it the largest certification company in that market. That ranking and the months-to-hours claim are the company’s own, and the announcement publishes no error rate for the agents.
Steel, fuel and power next
The expansion is already on the homepage: materials such as steel and cement, refrigeration and other industrial emissions, clean power matched to time and place, fuels for aviation, maritime and logistics, and data centers. Each of these markets sells a product whose value depends on a claim a buyer cannot see in the product itself, which is the gap Isometric was built to fill in carbon removal.
François Robinet, managing partner at AVP, said: “Certification has always forced a choice between speed and rigor. Isometric has eliminated that compromise.” He added that Jubbawy and the team had built “a genuinely category-defining company”.
For a cement maker or fuel producer, a certificate that takes 12 months or more means waiting as long for the premium it carries.
Isometric now has $40m and a client list led by Microsoft and Boeing to prove that the method it built for one young market works in steel, cement and fuel, where, by the company’s account, certification has run on manual processes for decades. Whether its agents catch as much as the company says will show in the first certificates it issues outside carbon removal.
