Capital Law is a commercial law firm headquartered at Capital Building on Tyndall Street in Cardiff. It advises businesses and public bodies on corporate and private equity, commercial contracts, disputes, employment, business immigration, real estate, debt finance, financial services regulation, and recovery and insolvency. Its sector teams cover education, financial services, health, care and life sciences, social housing and technology.

Elin Pinnell, managing partner since 2016, co-founded the firm in 2006 with senior partner Chris Nott and Duncan Macintosh, according to the firm. Pinnell led the employment department for 10 years before taking charge and now chairs the executive and operations teams. Nott, a commercial lawyer for more than 40 years and a former employment judge, holds an OBE for services to business and economic development in Wales.

Steady growth in the filed accounts

Turnover rose 12.6% from £20.3m to £22.8m in the year to 30 April 2025, according to Capital Law Ltd’s accounts at Companies House, and operating profit rose from £1.2m to £2.1m. The company employed an average of 173 people, including directors, up from 164: 143 in legal services and 30 in administration and support. The strategic report points to momentum in corporate transactions, real estate development, regulatory work and disputes, and to investment in document automation, matter management and cybersecurity.

Capital Law Holdings Ltd acquired the company in November 2024. Companies House lists Nott and Pinnell as the persons with significant control of the holding company, each with the right to appoint or remove directors.

Litigation funding and fintech work

New North Litigation Capital, the firm’s litigation funding business, finances claims from £500,000 to £30m and above, according to the firm, with Nott as its chief executive since August 2025. That work, together with legal support for startups and scaleups through FinTech Wales, earned the firm a place on the shortlist for the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards Europe 2026.

“Being nominated for the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards recognises the impact of our work,” Pinnell said when the shortlist was announced.

For owner-managed and growing businesses in South Wales, the firm offers a full commercial practice from a Cardiff base, with funding for claims available through its sister business. The firm is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority under number 644688, and in 2021 it became the first law firm to join Chambers Wales as a corporate partner.
