Leadership

Higgs is a Brierley Hill law firm acting for owner-managed businesses and the families behind them. Its business teams cover corporate and commercial work, dispute resolution, employment, real estate and insolvency and restructuring. Its private client side handles wills, trusts and probate, family law, personal injury, medical negligence and contentious probate. The firm traces its lineage to 1875 in the Black Country and now works from offices in Brierley Hill, Edinburgh and Shrewsbury.

Nick Taylor leads the firm as CEO. A corporate lawyer with more than 25 years of M&A experience, he was voted in as managing partner before taking the chief executive role, according to his firm profile.

Private equity and three acquisitions

On 25 November 2025 Higgs secured investment from August Equity, which the members’ report in its Companies House accounts says will fund the firm’s talent base, service capability and growth through targeted M&A. Project Castle Bidco Limited became a designated member of the LLP on the same day and is listed as its person with significant control.

The acquisitions followed within months. In February 2026 the firm announced the purchase of Vialex Limited and Navigator Employment Law Limited. In June it bought McKenzie Law, a family-owned Shrewsbury firm that had operated for 19 years and now trades under the Higgs name, giving the firm its third office.

“Acquiring McKenzie Law makes complete strategic sense for us,” Taylor said when the deal was announced.

Growth in the accounts

Turnover rose 13% from £22.9m to £25.9m in the year to November 2025, and profit before members’ remuneration grew from £8.39m to £8.82m, according to the group accounts filed at Companies House. The average number of people employed, including members on employment contracts, rose from 241 to 266, with fee earners up from 159 to 177. The LLP had 35 members on average.

Twelve trainees joined in September 2026 and nine more moved to the next stage, a cohort of 21.

Ranked across 11 practice areas

The Legal 500 UK 2027 guide, published on 30 September 2026, ranks Higgs in 11 practice areas, with Tier 1 places for corporate and commercial, charities and not-for-profit, and family in its West Midlands tables, according to the firm. The firm names 17 of its lawyers as individually recognized. Its real estate team won Property Law Firm of the Year at the National Property Awards in September 2026, the third year running.
