Stone King was founded in Bath in 1785 and has grown from a local practice into a national firm. It organizes its work around the charity, education, faith, business and social enterprise, and public and regulatory sectors, alongside a private client practice that covers trusts and estates, cross-border matters, family, property and crime. It has six offices, in Bath, Birmingham, Cambridge, Leeds, London and Manchester.
Vicky Brackett became chief executive in January 2025, following a governance review, according to the firm’s accounts. She began as a trainee solicitor in 1994, spent 10 years as a commercial litigator at Freshfields, and was elected managing partner of Thomas Eggar in 2012.
Growth across every sector
Turnover rose 11.4% from £27.7m to £30.8m in the year to 30 April 2025, according to the LLP’s accounts at Companies House. Operating profit rose 24.3% to £9.14m, and net assets grew 16.2% to £11.2m. Every sector grew: business and social enterprise turnover rose 19%, faith 16%, charity 13%, education 12% and private client 10%. The firm employed an average of 206 people, including members with contracts of employment, up from 195, with 138 fee earners and 68 support and administrative staff.
The members’ report also records the launch of the Black and Able Intern Scheme and a strategic review of how artificial intelligence could be applied to service delivery.
Ranked in its sectors
The Legal 500 2026 guide gave Stone King seven top-tier rankings, the firm said in October 2025: charities and not-for-profit in London, the South West and Yorkshire, education in the West Midlands and London, transport in the South West, and general crime and fraud in the South West. It holds 18 ranked listings in that guide in all. Chambers UK 2026 ranks it in Band 1 for charity, education (schools) and criminal law, across 10 ranked practice areas and 27 ranked lawyers.
“This independent recognition is a powerful endorsement of the trust our clients place in us,” Brackett said of the Legal 500 results.
For charities, academy trusts, independent schools and faith organizations, the firm offers sector teams that work with bodies such as the National Council for Voluntary Organisations and the Confederation of School Trusts. The firm also lists The Times Best Law Firms 2026, Lexcel accreditation, Cyber Essentials Plus certification and Living Wage Employer status. Its head of faith currently chairs the Ecclesiastical Law Society, according to the accounts.
