Zumo turns its compliance groundwork into a free UK crypto rules tracker

The Edinburgh-based platform launched an operator’s reading of the FCA rulebook on the day the regulator began taking applications for its new regime

The facts
  • The FCA's application window runs from 30 September 2026 to 28 February 2027
  • The new cryptoasset regime comes into force on 25 October 2027
  • The FCA issued its final crypto rulebook in June 2026
  • Zumo Financial Services Limited, registered in Edinburgh, was incorporated on 12 December 2017
Why it matters

Turning analysis a company must do anyway into a specific, free tool can be a cheaper route to buyers than another white paper, and tying it to a regulator's deadline puts it in front of compliance teams when they are looking. The catch is upkeep: a tracker that falls behind the rulebook damages the brand that published it. Leaders copying the move should fund its maintenance before launch, not after.

“Building it has meant reading the regime rules right down to the level of every individual obligation, mapping each one to the regulated activity it attaches to, and keeping that mapping current as further papers land.”Nick Jones, founder and chief executive, Zumo

Zumo, a crypto-as-a-service platform, released a free web tool on 30 September 2026 that sorts the obligations in the UK's incoming cryptoasset rulebook by type of business, from brokers and trading platforms to stablecoin issuers. It went live the day the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) opened a five-month application window for crypto firms.

Zumo sells the back end that lets other firms offer crypto to UK customers through a single API, covering custody, trading and know-your-customer checks. It says other trackers of the UK regime come from law firms and consultancies, and that its own grew out of building systems that satisfy the rules for its regulated clients rather than out of advisory work.

The stakes for applicants are high. The FCA says authorization is not automatic: firms that fall short of its four standards, which run from consumer protection to financial resilience, cannot be authorized or keep offering regulated services in the UK.

The company published the tool alongside its own survey of crypto firms with UK customers, for which it gave no sample size or fieldwork date. Nine in 10 respondents said they plan to apply before the window closes, but only 10% said they were fully prepared for the new rules and half (50%) had not got past planning.

The tracker starts with PS26/11, the FCA's final rules for firms conducting regulated cryptoasset activities. Zumo says each entry links to the FCA text it summarizes and is approved by one of its named regulatory analysts before users see it.
