Alfa raises £1m to take its AI recruiter to staffing firms

Alfa AI’s seed round brings James Caan in as an adviser and his investment office in as a backer. But the two accounts of the round name different investors, and no paying customer is named

On 3 August, Hamilton Bradshaw, the private investment office chaired by James Caan, said it had completed a seven-figure seed investment in Alfa AI, a London company that sells an AI recruiting agent, and that Caan would join the company as strategic adviser. On 5 August, BusinessCloud put the round at £1m and reported that it was led by Sake Bosch, with FirstDegree, Golden Egg Check and Black Green Capital taking part.

The two accounts don’t match. Hamilton Bradshaw’s announcement names no lead investor and no other backers, and the BusinessCloud report doesn’t list Hamilton Bradshaw among the investors. Neither gives a valuation for the seed round. Hamilton Bradshaw names the leadership as Alfie Whattam, the founder and chief executive, and Ed Godshaw, the chief technology officer. BusinessCloud names Dr Linda Yu as a co-founder alongside them.

Alfa automates the high-volume front end of hiring. According to its website on 4 August, it finds candidates, writes job ads and posts them to LinkedIn, Indeed, TotalJobs and CV Library, interviews applicants by audio or video through an AI avatar called Lisa, scores each one for fit and syncs the results with more than 70 applicant tracking systems, among them Greenhouse, Workday, Lever, Ashby and Bullhorn. The company says it scans more than 800 million profiles.

The seed money points that product at one buyer above the rest: the recruitment trade. Hamilton Bradshaw said the investment would fund engineering hires, expand the product roadmap and pay for a commercial rollout to staffing firms. It also said Alfa sits alongside its own recruitment business, where Caan’s 40 years in the sector show “where automation creates measurable value for agencies and in-house teams”.

From a slow process to a seed round

The company behind the product is older than its press coverage suggests. Alfa Technology Recruitment Ltd, which trades as Alfa, was incorporated at Companies House on 13 July 2022, although BusinessCloud dates the founding to 2025. Whattam has been a director since incorporation, and the register lists him as the company’s only person with significant control, holding 75% or more of its shares. Godshaw joined the board on 24 September 2024, as did a third director, Qian Yu.

Whattam set out the problem when Alfa raised its pre-seed round in February 2025. “Recruiting is broken. It’s a slow and manual process, with extremely expensive hiring fees, and hundreds of unsuitable applications,” he said in Fuel Ventures’ announcement, which put the round at $625,000 (about £464,000). Fuel Ventures led it. BusinessCloud reported at the time that the angels included Davie Rowe, Chris Adelsbach and Pierre Decote, whom it linked to Revolut.

Eighteen months on, the pitch has moved from a co-pilot for hiring managers to an agent that runs the role. Alfa’s own answer to how it differs from a faster applicant tracking system is that “a single recruiter can run dozens of roles at once”. Its June pricing page sold three plans under the heading “Solo recruiters”, metered in AI sourcing credits and live job postings, a model built for people who fill vacancies for a living.

An adviser who built a recruitment business

“Recruitment has always been a people business, but the search for those people should be faster, fairer and far less manual,” Caan said in Hamilton Bradshaw’s announcement. According to BusinessCloud, he also said the platform was “not AI for the sake of AI”. Whattam’s line in Hamilton Bradshaw’s announcement is about the adviser rather than the software: “Having a partner who has built and sold recruitment businesses for forty years changes the quality of every decision we make.”

By 4 August, the Alfa homepage was already using Caan’s name. It carried a BBC Dragons’ Den badge and an endorsement from him: “Talent remains the single biggest driver of business success.” The company was putting Caan’s name in front of the recruiters it sells to the day after the deal was announced.

Customers the company has yet to name

The company’s homepage says Alfa has saved 10,000 hours of recruiting time and $250,000 (about £185,000) in hiring costs, and screened 20,000 candidates. It doesn’t say for whom, over what period or how the savings were measured.

Under “Trusted by”, the homepage shows Revolut and Google logos and a quote, “10x hiring efficiency”, from Pierre Decote, credited as CRO at Revolut. Decote is the same name BusinessCloud listed among the pre-seed angels in 2025. Neither the Hamilton Bradshaw announcement nor the BusinessCloud report names a business that uses Alfa.

The seed round gives Alfa an adviser and an investor from inside the industry it wants to sell to, money for engineers and a planned push into staffing firms. It leaves two things for the company to settle in public: which investors are in the round and which employers and agencies are paying for the agent.
