Gearset names Mark Johnston chief marketing officer after AI launch

The Cambridge-based Salesforce DevOps company has picked a marketer with an agentic AI product launch on his record as it takes its Cam agent to more enterprise buyers

The facts
  • Gearset says it had 3,500 customers at the end of 2024, 1,000 of them enterprise clients.
  • Gearset reported 49% year-over-year revenue growth in 2024.
  • Gearset says Cam produced up to 44% of teams’ pull requests in customer pilots.
  • Gearset has offices in Cambridge, Belfast and Chicago.
What the move signals

Gearset’s emphasis on review and security controls aims its pitch at the IT and compliance staff in large Salesforce customers who approve how changes reach live systems, more than at individual developers. Putting a new marketing chief in place so soon after the agent’s launch shows the company moving from building Cam to selling it to those buyers.

“We’re investing to deepen what our platform can do for those teams, building on the processes they already trust. That means investing in the people who can support our next phase of growth as well as the technology.”Kevin Boyle, chief executive, Gearset

Gearset, a Cambridge-based company that sells DevOps software to teams building on Salesforce, named Mark Johnston as its chief marketing officer on 22 October.

Johnston’s record is in data software. Gearset says he helped grow Domo and Matillion, and that at Matillion he worked on bringing Maia, the company’s agentic product, to market as the business shifted toward AI. Before that he worked on partner strategy at Microsoft during its move to cloud.

The hire comes seven weeks after Gearset launched Cam, an agent that takes a Salesforce change request through to a pull request and routes the work through a team’s own testing and review checks. The company, which began with deployment tools and now also sells testing, release management, backup and monitoring, says it wants to take that wider platform to more organizations and win a larger share of enterprise accounts.

Gearset increased headcount by 50% in 2024, according to the company, and in September 2025 moved into a 16,000 sq ft headquarters at Cambridge Science Park, almost double its previous space, to make room for more hiring.
