Dext opens practice data to ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot

The IRIS-owned bookkeeping software company’s AI Connector answers plain-language questions on client cash, health scores and staff hours from inside the AI assistants practices already use

The facts
  • Included at no extra cost for practices on Dext’s Advanced plan
  • Access is read-only and follows each user’s existing Dext permissions
  • Dext says its AI models were trained on more than 2 billion receipts and invoices over 16 years
  • Dext says more than 12,000 accounting and bookkeeping firms and 700,000 businesses use its software, and it processes more than 350 million documents a year
Why it matters

Practices whose staff already use a general-purpose AI assistant gain answers drawn from client ledgers instead of pasted exports, without a separate AI product to buy or a new interface to learn. The cost is in where client financial data goes: every query hands records to an outside AI provider, so the choice of assistant and its enterprise terms becomes part of a practice’s data-protection position. For the businesses whose books sit in Dext, their accountant’s AI assistant can now see cash, debtor and tax figures that previously stayed inside bookkeeping software.

“This is an early step, and one we expect to build on.”Sabby Gill, chief executive, Dext (statement carried by CPA Practice Advisor)

Dext, the bookkeeping software company owned by IRIS Software Group, launched AI Connector on 22 October. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) connector lets accounting and bookkeeping practices query their Dext data through ChatGPT, Claude or Microsoft Copilot. The launch was first reported by CPA Practice Advisor.

Practices could already see much of this data in Dext dashboards such as Practice Insights and team performance views. The connector adds a conversational route to it. According to Dext’s help center, users can ask for financial snapshots of up to 20 clients at once, aged debtors and creditors, invoices and journals, fixed asset registers, Corporation Tax and VAT estimates, and live bank balances for clients on Xero. Several of those need Dext’s Data Health & Insights add-on, and data on users, access and time tracking is limited to admins.

The connector cannot create or post invoices, journals or bills, submit VAT returns or file Corporation Tax, and it cannot open document images or PDFs. Dext describes it as an early preview for Practice accounts only; Business accounts cannot connect yet. Stephen Edginton, Dext’s chief product and technology officer, said the tool retrieves data and leaves decisions to the practice.

Set up at workspace level

A firm’s admin adds the connector in Claude’s organization settings, ChatGPT’s plugin directory or the Microsoft 365 admin center, and each Dext practice account can authenticate only one workspace. Staff then connect their own Dext logins; personal assistant accounts get no access.

Dext says the connector retrieves only the data a question needs, which the chosen provider – OpenAI, Anthropic or Microsoft – then processes under its own data policies. The company recommends that practices review those providers’ enterprise data terms.
