Pax8’s 8os puts its own meter under MSPs’ managed AI services
Pax8 wants MSPs to sell AI to small businesses as a managed service through its new 8os platform. The partner sets the price, but the meter, the caps and the billing sit on Pax8’s platform

- Pax8 launched 8os and 8bot at its Beyond EMEA conference in Copenhagen on 19 October, with general availability planned for early next year.
- Pax8 has not published what it will charge MSPs for 8os or 8bot.
- GTIA launched its Managed Intelligence Alliance, which it describes as a vendor-neutral program, on the same day, with Pax8 executive Rob Rae as chair.
Pax8 used its Beyond EMEA conference in Copenhagen on 19 October to launch 8os, which it calls the first operating system for the ‘agentic workforce’, and 8bot, a packaged AI coworker that managed service providers can deploy to their clients’ staff. Limited early access began the same week, with general availability planned for early next year. Pax8 has not published a price.
The pitch is aimed at the more than 47,000 IT partners Pax8 says rely on it. Pax8 wants them to become what it calls managed intelligence providers: firms that sell AI to small businesses as a governed, recurring service across what Pax8 calls a fragmented AI landscape. 8os brings the agents, models, tools and providers a client uses under one partner-controlled workforce, keeps client-specific memory and tracks usage and cost per user and per customer. The release says “hard caps stop runaway bills”.
“AI is becoming a worker, and that changes what small businesses need from their technology partners,” said Scott Chasin, chief executive of Pax8. He said 8os and 8bot together “make managed intelligence repeatable and scalable”.
The product answers a real gap for MSPs: per-customer metering and governance for AI they would otherwise have to build themselves. But the design puts the counting and billing of AI work on Pax8’s platform rather than in the MSP’s own systems. The provider sets the price, according to the release, “with a simplified billing experience through the Pax8 relationship”. For MSPs that already buy Microsoft and security licenses through Pax8, the arrangement is a familiar one carried into AI: the partner sets the customer’s price, and the usage record and the billing run through Pax8’s platform.
Built on the billing system
8os runs on Pax8’s “existing multi-tenant, commerce, identity, and billing infrastructure”, the release says. 8bot is sold as “packaged employee capacity” that partners can deploy and “start earning recurring revenue in minutes”, in Pax8’s words. Libby McIlhany, Pax8’s chief product officer, said: “Our partners have told us they want to deliver AI value without building a custom solution for every client.”
Pax8 builds the case for that demand from its own research. Its SMB AI Pulse Reports, which Pax8 runs itself and cites without sample sizes or dates, found that 90% of small businesses are using or experimenting with AI but only 23% have a documented AI use policy. The 8os release says 71% of those using AI have built at least one AI solution and only 31% of those builders have a formal review or approval process, although Pax8’s guide release of the same day puts builders at 67% of AI users. A second Pax8 release issued at the conference said, without naming the research behind it, that MSP confidence in delivering AI had fallen “from 90% to roughly 50% over the past year”.
Those figures describe small businesses building AI faster than they can govern it and MSPs unsure how to deliver it. Pax8 paired them with a sales tool built on its own catalog. Ryan Walsh, Pax8’s co-founder and chief strategy officer, said the new Managed Intelligence Guide “helps partners map their Managed Intelligence engagements to the right solution from the breadth of offerings in the Pax8 Marketplace”.
A standards program with a Pax8 chair
On the same day, GTIA, the nonprofit membership association for the IT channel, launched the Managed Intelligence Alliance. It describes the alliance as a vendor-neutral program to develop open specifications, capability standards, accreditation and research for AI services delivered through IT service providers. Pax8 is its charter member. Rob Rae, Pax8’s corporate vice-president of community and ecosystems and a member of GTIA’s board, chairs it. The founding members include Microsoft, CrowdStrike and NinjaOne.
GTIA says the alliance is designed to keep the work “unbiased and focused on advancing the industry and serving customers, rather than furthering the commercial interests of any one organization”. It will publish its standards and accreditation frameworks openly and at no cost. Dan Wensley, GTIA’s chief executive, said: “AI is creating an enormous opportunity for the channel, but trust must come first.”
Open standards would give MSPs a reference point outside any single marketplace. GTIA recruited Carlo Tortora Brayda as the alliance’s director to run its day-to-day operations against priorities set by an executive council. Its chair is a Pax8 executive, and the alliance was announced on the same morning as Pax8’s own operating system for the managed intelligence provider, the term Pax8 uses for the partner it wants to create.
The price Pax8 has not published
Pax8’s 8os release says the provider sets the customer’s price. It does not say what Pax8 will charge the provider for 8os or 8bot, how AI usage underneath will be priced or whether the client memory and usage history 8os builds up can move with an MSP that later changes platform. Those terms will set how much of a managed AI service’s margin stays with the MSP.
Until Pax8 publishes what it charges for 8os and 8bot, the margin on a managed AI service built on 8os cannot be worked out from anything Pax8 has made public, and the usage history that service generates will sit on Pax8’s platform.
