Zoom opens its meeting and call record to outside AI assistants
A new context layer lets ChatGPT and other assistants draw on Zoom conversations, while promised admin controls over AI agents arrive months behind the connectors
- Centralized AI Management: expected December 2026
- Deepfake Risk Detection: expected December 2026
- Custom AI Guardrails: expected Q1 2027
- Microsoft Teams meeting connectivity: expected in the first half of 2027
- Zoom Virtual Agent customer count: up 256%, according to Zoom's own second-quarter fiscal 2027 results
Meeting transcripts and call records held in Zoom become material that a firm's chosen assistant can query, which pulls conversation data into the governance scope of a second vendor. Zoom is opening that data to outside assistants before its own tools for auditing agents and limiting what appears in AI output are out, so firms that connect early rely on the access settings the context layer launches with.
“AI models are only as powerful as their understanding of your business, and that context makes all the difference”Eric Yuan, founder and chief executive, Zoom
Zoom unveiled a Unified Context Layer at its Zoomtopia conference in San Jose on 20 October and said it expects annual revenue to pass $5bn (£3.7bn) this year. The layer links conversation history from meetings, phone and chat with documents and near real-time activity in connected third-party apps, according to Zoom.
Through MCP connectors and APIs, that context can be used in ChatGPT, Codex and Claude. Users will also be able to start Zoom workflows from Codex and Claude, covering meeting, chat and phone actions as well as CRM record updates, Zoom says. Its agentic search, available now, reaches across Zoom Meetings, Phone and Chat and more than 40 third-party apps, including ServiceNow, Workday, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.
Centralized AI Management gives admins a clearer view of AI agents, account-level policies and audit controls, including control over agents that staff build themselves. Custom AI Guardrails set rules that reduce the chance specified information appears in AI summaries and can require human review of client-facing content. Deepfake Risk Detection flags participant audio or video that may have been altered outside Zoom. Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels already sync into Zoom Meetings and Whiteboard.
For phone customers, WhatsApp for Business now runs inside Zoom Phone on a firm's existing number, with templates and compliance managed from the admin portal. Zoom also plans meeting connectivity with Microsoft Teams, including content sharing, participant rosters and read-only chat.
