Google Cloud power event in London disrupts Revolut payments

Card payments, transfers and sign-ins at the bank were disrupted for several hours after one zone of Google’s cloud lost power, a link Revolut confirmed later in the day

The facts
  • Google listed 38 affected products, including Compute Engine, Kubernetes Engine, Cloud SQL, Cloud Spanner, BigQuery and Cloud Storage
  • Revolut has more than 80 million customers, 800,000 of them businesses, BleepingComputer reported
  • Revolut has 3.4 million customers in Ireland, according to The Irish Times
  • AIB and Bank of Ireland said their services were unaffected, The Irish Times reported
Why it matters

For companies that run supplier payments, payroll or card spending through Revolut Business, the point of failure sat two layers below the bank, in one zone of its cloud provider’s London region. Whether a payment goes through on such a day depends on redundancy built into the fintech’s own architecture, which its business customers neither see nor control. Google’s promised analysis, and any account from Revolut of how its systems were spread across zones, would be the first public detail on which of Revolut’s payment systems depended on that single zone.

“We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe.”Revolut spokesman, Revolut

Revolut’s card payments, transfers and app sign-ins were disrupted on 20 October after a power event knocked out one zone of Google Cloud’s London region, europe-west2. Revolut’s status page listed 28 services as partially unavailable, BleepingComputer reported. In an update timed at 18:52 London time, the outlet said Revolut had linked the outage to the Google Cloud incident and that all services were restored.

The disruption also reached currency exchange, stock trading and live support chat, according to BleepingComputer. Customers in Ireland and elsewhere reported problems with card payments and cash withdrawals, and Downdetector recorded a spike in reports between 7am and 8am, The Irish Times reported.

Google’s timeline

Google’s incident report dates the problem from 07:08 London time. At 12:12 it said a power event had caused an outage in the europe-west2-b zone and that the power event was mitigated. Recovery began with existing workloads, and Google warned that customers might not yet be able to create new ones.

Google reported recovery for most workloads from 13:10. At 15:03 it said the issue was mitigated for most customers but still affected a very small number, and that it would publish an analysis once its investigation was complete. While the incident was open, Google’s suggested workaround was to move affected workloads to another zone or region where feasible.
