Cytix raises $7m to govern the risk in AI-era software changes
The Manchester startup is betting that security teams need to judge the risk in every code change, not just scan for flaws, as AI-assisted development speeds up release cycles
- Ben Armstrong is Cytix’s co-founder and chief executive
- The platform sits between a customer’s software development lifecycle and its risk, security and compliance teams
- Northern Gritstone, chaired by Lord Jim O’Neill, says it has made 55 investments
Security leaders whose developers use AI coding assistants should check whether they can show, for any release, what changed, who or what wrote it and why it was judged safe to ship. If that trail lives only in engineering tickets, the gap is likely to surface first in an audit or an incident. Ask whether current scanners rank changes by business risk or simply list vulnerabilities, and set a rule for which changes need a security review before release.
“AI-assisted development means change now happens at machine speed. Meanwhile, very few security leaders have control over, or understanding of, those changes from a risk perspective.”Ben Armstrong, chief executive, Cytix
Cytix, a Manchester cybersecurity startup, said on 12 August 2026 that it had raised a $7m (£5.2m) Series A round led by Northern Gritstone, which invests in science and technology businesses rooted in the North of England.
Existing investors Auriga Cyber Ventures and NPIF II – PXN Equity Finance also took part. The latter is managed by PXN Ventures as part of the £660m Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II, which the British Business Bank operates and which offers smaller northern businesses loans of up to £2m and equity of up to £5m.
The money will fund the rollout of Cytix’s change risk platform, which went on general release the same day. The company says the platform monitors each software change a business makes, assesses and validates the risk it introduces, and records how that risk was handled so the evidence can be shown to regulators. Cytix says the round will help it reach enterprise and regulated customers for whom governing change is a regulatory obligation, and that customers can buy directly or through its managed service partnerships with NCC Group and KPMG.
