Eurostar puts an app in ChatGPT as AI traffic outruns bookings
Eurostar says the chatbot is now the source of most of its AI-referred visits, yet those visits rarely end in a ticket. Its answer is to sit inside ChatGPT rather than wait to be found
- Eurostar announced its app in ChatGPT on 20 August 2026, available first in the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands.
- Traffic to eurostar.com from AI platforms grew fivefold between January 2025 and June 2026, Eurostar says.
- ChatGPT accounted for 85% of that AI-referred traffic in June 2026, according to Eurostar.
- AI applications produced 0.8–1% of ticket bookings on eurostar.com between May and July 2026, Eurostar says.
- SNCF Connect put an experimental app in ChatGPT in late April 2026, with purchases completed on its own site.
Eurostar has done what few brands will: published the gap between AI-referred traffic and AI-referred revenue. For anyone selling AI-search or agentic-commerce services to UK customers, a fivefold rise in referrals against a conversion share under 1% is the pitch and the caveat in one set of figures.
The work Eurostar and SNCF Connect describe is integration rather than copywriting: exposing live inventory to an assistant, keeping checkout and card data on the merchant’s own site and measuring what follows. Partners with integration and data engineering skills win that work. Agencies selling generative engine optimization as a content service will find customers asking for the booking number.
“Search habits are changing quickly, and travellers are increasingly using conversational tools to research and plan their journeys.”François Le Doze, chief commercial officer, Eurostar
On 20 August Eurostar announced it had put an official app inside ChatGPT, saying that visits to eurostar.com referred by AI platforms had grown fivefold between January 2025 and June 2026 while AI applications produced only 0.8–1% of its ticket bookings between May and July. Eurostar calls itself the first European rail operator in the chatbot, starting in the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The app answers plain-language requests for trains, departure times and fares, then hands the traveler to eurostar.com with the trip details already filled in. Payment never happens inside ChatGPT. Eurostar says ChatGPT supplied 85% of its AI-referred traffic in June.
A crowded platform
The claim to be first needs a footnote. SNCF Connect, the French state railway’s retail platform, ran an experimental app in ChatGPT from late April 2026, according to SNCF’s own digital team, and it also sends buyers back to its own site to pay. Raconteur reported on 15 September that SNCF Connect, Trainline and Omio are all building conversational tools, and Great British Railways intends to merge the 14 Department for Transport operators’ websites and apps into one, inside what its procurement notice calls a fair and open retail market.
François Le Doze, chief commercial officer of Eurostar, gives one reason: customers are researching trips in conversational tools, so Eurostar wants its timetable and fares to be what those tools return. Whether the money follows is the question the next set of figures will answer.
